alternative to rosies??

does anyone know what other live food i can feed my 8" needlenose gar and my 9" clown knife aside from rosies and (ugh) goldfish? my clown knife will eat ghost shimp but they're hard to come by around here, and occasionally he'll pick at the frozen prawn but thats rare. i wanna mix up their diet a little and i cant seem to find any alternatives. thanks all.
 
you should get them off feeder fish. but ive fed my fish guppies and endlers. cull cichlids are good too. easiest way for me when i had belonesox was breeding mosquito fish. i put some in a kiddie pond with live plants and had hundreds real soon.
 
I like the idea of breeding your own mosquito fish; however that would again become a routine, tired diet of all one species.

I say whatever you can get that's cheap (and healthy...I avoid those swarming tanks of "feeder" fish). Why not try starting several colonies of easy to breed fish, guppies, platys, swordtails, mollies, or even some of the more prolific egg layers if you have the room, desire, and patience to raise them. Possibly convicts, rams, kribensis...they're all fairly prolific egg layers, and some protect their fry until they're large enough to fend for themselves.
 
you can set something up in a kiddie pool, my little water garden has snails and mosquito fish with tadpoles and frogs, it also has some separated areas where my crawfish always breed. i get lots of water bugs and stuff like mosquito larvae.
 
Never kept a clown knife, but my needlenose was exceptionally fond of freeze-dried krill. Would only take the "straight" ones -- couldn't figure out how to swallow the bent ones.
 
man..ive tried getting my Red Snakehead to eat alternatives to feeders..but he just doesnt seem to want anything else...i've starved him for over 2 weeks...trying to get him to eat beef heart...but he doesnt even look at it...i dangle it in front of his face with fishing line and he still doesnt even notice it there...

does anyone have tips on how to train him or get him to learn to eat something other than feeder?

also, what other type of fish(es) would make a better substitute...something i can easily raise in a small 10 gallon? also...something that will grow a little faster..any tips would be great..thanks guys
