One of my brother's friends told me that his betta has laid eggs, I suspect that it's a male and has simply blown a bubble nest.
I supplied him with the following advice in a PM, is it accurate?
" Hey, I was just wondering about your siamese, is this one of the ones in the divided 5g? If it's blowing bubbles at the surface they're not eggs, but it's showing that it's willing to have babies.
What you should do is move him into the larger tank and turn down the filtration so that the surface isn't too disturbed, when he starts blowing bubbles again introduce a female siamese into the tank. They'll breed and then the male will take the eggs and put them into the bubble nest, after he's done that he'll attack the female so you'll have to remove her as soon as they've done it.
The male will look after the eggs obsessively for a couple of days, this is why the filtration has to be down 'cos when an egg falls from its bubble (they're heavier than water), he'll get it in his mouth and put it back in. The stronger the filtration, the more eggs that will fall out, the male may get exhausted and die.
After they've hatched you should remove the male so he doesn't eat the fry.
Feed the fry on infusoria or brine shrimp, they won't be able to eat pellets or flakes yet.
That would be sweet if you bred your own strain of siamese, but be careful that not all of the fry are eaten by the other tank inhabitants.
Make sure the water quality is near-perfect because if they grow up under-fed in poor quality water then most of them will grow up with physical defects, if this is the case it's best to put them out of their misery early, especially because if they grow up their children will inherit the defects.
When the male's back in the divided tank and starts blowing bubbles again, repeat the process and you'll probably get better success, i.e. better fertility rate, healthier fry, less fry eaten by the male.
They'll probably form a good breeding pair and then you can start breeding selectively (don't inbreed 'cos that causes more inherited genetic problems)
