Amber, other rocks, in fishtank?

Hi im working on a new tank, mainly for a crab or two and maybe one fish. I already have some obsidian in my other tank and that did not change the water much, if at all. I was wondering if anyone else has experimented with other odd rocks/crystals and had good or bad experiences. What i wanna do is put a fairly big chunk of amber in there and maybe some fossils as well. Any ideas what that might do to the tank?

thanks!

Am I remembering right that amber is basically petrified tree sap? If that is the case, I'd be worried about it. All kinds of nasty stuff could leech out. I have no experience with it. Hopefully someone comes along that does.... you could coat it in aquarium safe epoxy...

I don't think the amber would be a problem since it can form in the ocean such as the Baltic Sea. I would be very careful about putting any crystals in the tank as they might dissolve slowly and lead to health problems in your tank.

Ambergris?

Petrified wood and fossils should be fine, I think. Not sure about amber however. I believe it can slowly degrade with water exposure. What kind of crystals do you have in mind? Something hard like quartz or iron pyrite would be fine.

Well not crystals exactly, was just curious about that. I will leave the amber alone then, dont wanna risk my new crabby. I will stick with fossils for now, maybe some petrified wood cuz that sounds cool too

I would also be careful with fossils. Most fossils are set in limestone or sandstone, both of which will likely make your pH go up. Also, prepared fossils can contain a lot of weird chemicals, many of them glues and acids I would personally not trust in my aquariums.

If you find the fossil yourself, you can figure out what kind of rock it is and you're okay with your pH going up - you'll probably be okay.
