Amethist in tank?

I have a bunch of big chunks of amethist from brasil, can I put 1 in my tank?

I've used amythyst and quartz crystals in tanks and found that it's very difficut to scub algea off of them, iIt gets way down into the cracks. It doesn't show as much in a dark purple piece, but in the white quartz especially the algea looks pretty bad after a while.

Soaking them in bleach should help with the algae, just be sure to rinse them off after and allow them to dry out so that the chlorine dissapates.
