i just went down to Ralphs and bought some ammonia, i dosed a little too much. is this okay? will it eventually go down?
or do i need to do a water change?( I hate the smell/ feeling of ammonia):thud:

this is the beginning of my fishless cycle and i'm wondering if i got off on the right foot.

yes. that might have been a bit much..

how big is the tank..

ammonia that high may warrant a fresh start

I was told by some of the experts around here, back when my tank was at 6ppm, that I didn't need to worry about doing a water change until it reached 8ppm...

Once your biocycle starts, it will take care of that ammonia. I am worried about nitrite which will cloud your water. Change 25%, and let the tank cycle.

Hey if you are smelling ammonia make sure you arent far higher then 8 ppm...I know I am in the middle of fishless cycle myself, my test kit which is a pretty good one as far as I can tell (API) doesnt really distinguish well once you go above 6ppm...in fact 50 ppm still looked like around 8ppm....why I know this is I was an idiot and dumped almost a 1/2 gallon of ammonia in a 90g tank and was like 2 weeks and no change til I realised to read directions of test kit and seen it said wait 5 minutes for color to develop. To make a long story short MANY water changes and stirring rocks up I was finally able to get ammonia level around 6ppm and now see a daily ammonia level of 0 after I pour a couple cap fulls in daily to get through nitrite cycle. Now with levels around 4-6 ppm I never smell ammonia in tank. Either way though as I was told by others no matter how high ammonia level is it isnt stopping ammonia cycle just taking forEVER for it to develop. I think I was told in my similar question like this (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89058) 5 drops per 10 gallons...this has worked well for me....hope it helps you...and hope you arent as saturated as I was. G/L!!!
