Ammonia for fishless cycle & where to get it in the UK

LOL :)

Good thing I didnt put that in my tank, A shoal of blonde haired neons

hope I can get some sorted as fishy cycles dont really apeal anymore given what I had to do with my poor silver sharks last week :( (never wanna be in that situation again)

Ammonia is used for perming hair, but the solution that comes in the kits usually contains lots of perfumes as well, so wouldn't be a good choice for fishless cycling.

LOL

I went in my local boots and they claim to sell pure stuff but just didnt have it in stock

The sand?
Well... I went to my local garden centre on the hunt for playsand and low and behold in there little aquatics section they had aquatic sand ???? :) (more than likely playsand in flashy packaging, but hey)
It worked out at just under a tenner for 20kg which has more than cover the bottom of the tank with lots of hills and everything :D
Its a kind of off white/grey colour and looks the dogs (will post some pics tommorrow as the tank is finally starting to look like a fish tank.
Not exactly what I set out to have but I am more than pleased with the results.

In answer to the other thread tho, Sand does make a good substrate aslong as your carefull adding water (to an empty tank, I used an upside down culinder and pour onto it slowly) it hasnt clouded up the water or anything :)

Another thought on this amonnia couldnt I take water from my other tank daily and add that????? (or though its very lightly stocked due to recent probs :()

What you need is some chemistry type friends who work in labs. Preferably some chemistry students who'll do anything for a dare.

Any self respecting lab will have ammonia and or aqueous ammonia at all times in copious quantities. Easily sneek-out-able for free in the quantity you'll need.

Failing that, just pm me your mailing address and paypal me the postage and $1.00 for the ammonia and I can ship you a bottle of ammonia.

The Problem is postage from the USA is a rip off something like $20 for that bottle of ammonia! Which doesn't really make it worth it. I wonder if school has some i can "borrow"! might have to sneak into the prep room one of these days and see whats on the shelf! Just hope they got thier labeling right!!! could end up putting a nice dose of hydrochloric acid in my tank!!!! Although the water round here is soooo alkaline its incredible!!

Oh and English Lion check your PM's

Too true! Instead of hassling with not getting my film x-rayed at airport security when I recently visited the UK and Ireland, I shipped it back from ireland instead. It was only 20 rolls of film in a small box and it cost 11 euro to ship! and it took two weeks to get here! It would have cost more than twice as much to get it there in a few days. I didn't know how desperate you were for that ammonia:P
