Ammonia, Hard to Find -- Poss Solution?

Everyone here has a readily-available, and free source of ammonia, it just seems that no one wants to use it.

I like that idea! As it stands right now, one cannot buy BioSpira in Canada anyway...it sure would be helpful to be able to purchase fresh bacteria from the LFS, rather than waste money on Cycle or another similarly useless product.
That IS an awesome idea! Wow. So simple, but then the best ideas usually ARE the simple ones.

You rock, Dave!

I'd like to take credit, but we actually have an LPS in town that does this, and has little signs posted all over their fish tank display reccomending X number of bio-balls per gallon of aquarium etc. I imagine it saves them huge amounts of money in the dead fish warranty department. They are a great store, but very small and very low stocking on fish equipment with a lot more emphasis on birds and furry friends.

I would imagine if one were to purchase some bio-balls, most good fish stores would let you float them for several days before you took them home.

I do like the idea of the bio balls and will bring it up to our manager and fish guy. We are a general pet shop but sell huge amounts of fish, largely marine money wise (since marine is pricier that is logic) but have somewhere around 1100 gallons of fresh too. Anyone have an idea of bio ball recommendations per gallon?

I did a similar thing setting up my 56 column. I took water from my established ten and also 'used' gravel from the store. It was set up specifically for a planted tank, which I wanted, and so I took 70# home free and it established very well.

I found pure ammonia at the 99 cent store today. Reasonable price, and a perfect size little jug. It said it contained no phosphates or detergents, but it appeared to foam when shaken. What gives??

I'd not use it...the foaming is suspicious. Have you done any more investigation into its ingredients?

What causes the foaming that we're trying to avoid? I assumed detergents/scents did, but that doesn't appear to be the case! The label only said, "pure ammonia" It didn't list anything else, so I assumed that was all that was in it. I didn't mark down the brand to look online either. :-/ I'll see if I can find it online somewhere.

Chances are pretty slim you'll find it online if its some off brand.

And just because it doesnt list things doesnt mean its not in there. Usually surfactants foam.

So are the surfactants what we're trying to avoid?? Do they list those on the label?? As "surfactants"?? Thanks. :)

My family owns a blueprint shop, so we have tons of ammonia. But there's a difference in the BAWM, and no one could figure out if that was ok or not, if I remember correctly. I need to look that thread up again...

Edit: Just went to Wal Mart. They have "pure" ammonia for .97. It doesn't foam, but it's label reads: ammonia, surfectants. WTH? Someone has to have their lines crossed somewhere, 'cause nothing adds up... It's frustrating!
