Ammonia levels are high.

Ok.

More water changes it is.

I feel that in the past 3 weeks, I have done more water changes on this cycling 55 GAL then the 2 years my 10 GAL has been up. :D

I am gonna get me a new test kit today.

Any recommendations?

I just have used the Hagen kits which seem to work fine for me. But I have heard that you need a kit that does Nessler (?) if you have chloramines instead of chlorine or if you used products that bind ammonia into a non toxic form otherwise you will get false readings.

I have Chlorine, and the only chemical I have used or will ever use is Chlor-out (chorline remover). I dont like the idea of using chemicals in the water. Mother nature doesnt use chemicals, so neither should my tank. (IMO) :D

patience is key when cycling a tank. I waited 3 moths before adding fish to my 29 gallon I know it was longer than usuall but I wanted to make sure before dumping 100 bucks worth of fish and plants into it. just let your tank do its thing and do some regular water changes to help keep the water fresh. Give some time for the biological filtration to set up

Fish or no fish??

If you have no fish in this tank (they went to the 10 gallon? -- is this 10 gal tank cycled or not?) then forget about the water changes, the water changes are just to save the fish from harm.

The nitrite part of the cycle is about twice as long as the ammonia part, so just be patient. If there are no fish in the tank, you need to add ammonia to keep the cycle going, or just add the fish back one by one to get some ammonia but not too much.

That is correct. The fish have been moved to the 10 GAL

I felt bad, they were stressing from the ammonia. It got up to 8ppm.

So, let me get this right.

1. I need to get the Ammonia back up? Currently at 1.0.

2. Add a couple of fish back? to get the Ammonia started again. (I have 4 small feeder gold fish that I got to start the cycle).

3. The Nitrite is a sign that the cycle is in the process, and I do NOT want to do water changes if I do NOT add the fish.

~correct?~
