Less fish = less mess, less maintenance and less chance of disease. I think about 6 as a maximum for a 5 gallon. If you stick a plant in the gravel, it helps too. I'll dig up the name of a low-light one if you are interested.

My dad has in his 5 gallon tank, an algae eater, 2 adult guppies, 8 or 9 guppy babies, and another fish, not sure what it is. His tank always stays so clean, not sure how he does it though.

I work evenings, dont get home until around midnight.
 
Just a thought. I found pure Ammonia at a local hardware store.....

No urine is not mostly ammonia it is 95% water actually and 2.5% uric acid. It eventually CONVERTS to ammonia after hittng the air.

Use some fish food to help cycle. Pretend you have invisible fish!
