i started a 55 gallon tank a few months ago, all was well until about 10 days ago, very cloudy water, high amonia and nitrate and nitrite levels, i did a 50% water change and added ammo lock, the water looked better, not perfectly clear, levels were good, then a couple of days ago the water was cloudy, last nite i did 50% water change, the water is clear, nitrate and nitrite levels normal, amonia level is high. help, do i do another water change, add ammo lock?

sounds like it is cycling, it will clear up when the cycle is done. keep up the water changes and just wait it out. having not done the cycle before adding fish or using bio-spira, that's all you can do.

just noticed you said the tank has been up for months? samething basically applies, you must have sent the tank into a "mini" cycle, perhaps by overfeeding.

Can you think of anything differently you may have done 10 days ago? Also, I may be wrong, but I think ammo lock detoxifys the ammonia, but it will still give you high readings on test kits. What is your normal maintenance schedule for water changes and cleaning filter media? What are the exact numbers you are getting from your test kits?

yeah for some reason i didnt think of that, if youve changed your media all at once or cleaned it all out under tap water that could do it too.
