Has anyone used Amquel Plus? Does it really take care of ammonia, nitrite and nitrates? What about using it for a fishy cycle. It says that it wont interfere with the bacteria cycle. Would it protect the fish enough? Any opinions or insight would be appreciated :help:

Amquel (the original, not the Plus kind) WOULD detoxify the ammonia yet still leave it available to nitrifying bacteria. I haven't used Amquel Plus, but I would probably be willing to try it. I don't know how you'd know if measureable nitrites were toxic or not... usually, with ammonia complexers, you still have to do water changes to take care of the eventual nitrite spike. Might make for an interesting experiment...

i used it to help with my betta wall, i also did 25% water changes about every other day for a couple of weeks, while it cycled. it really seemed to help me through all the spikes, because it actually got rid of ammonia and nitrite- i had big problems and with that and water changes i didnt loose a fish.

Thanks for the input! The Amquel plus is also supposed to neutralize nitrates but I still do regular water changes. I'm using it along with Hagen's "Cycle" (and some substrate from my established tank). It appears to be doing well and so are the fish. I'm testing the water everyday (you have to be careful what kind of ammonia test you use. Some will give false readings with the Amquel)and doing 25% water changes every other day. It's only been a few days and I have no detectable ammonia or nitrites but I am starting to see nitrates! I did a fishless cycle with my last tank and it took six weeks. This appears to be moving much faster. Probably due to my seeding the tank but the Cycle may be helping as well. I'll post results when I'm fully cycled.

Using Cycle will confuse your results; many people find nitrites and/or nitrates immediately after adding Cycle. It is poorly regarded by most of us around here, and you'd probably be better off without it...

Cycle is pretty much a waste of money. The stuff doesn't work and it's the wrong bacteria needed...if any bacteria are still alive in the bottle to begin with. Spend your money on some Bio-Spira...it's the only cycling aid proven to actually work.

I use the amquil plus, but my tank is set up and I only use it when I add water. Our area has added chloramine to the tap and it has not killed any of my fish yet. I also do regular water changes.
