Alot of people use the "Southdown" play sand sold at Home Depot (from what I hear, Southdown has grown wise to the pet industry, and no longer sells to H.D as play sand), and almost all of us use aragonite(calcium carbonate) sands.....anywayz, today i was trippin through the lfs and saw some of their reptile sand called calci-sand or something like it, and was wondering why people dont try this sand. I read the bag, and it says contains only 100% calcium carbonate. Isnt this the same thing? what am I missing?? the one I am talking about is bright white and sugar fine, as they also have some with "non toxic" dyes added for different colors. As long as you use the one without any dyes or additives, what could be the harm from using it? Just a nagging question I would like your input on. Might be a helpful idea for newbies first setting up their tanks. Mogurnda, Id really like to hear your take on this! Thanx guys!

Isnt that stuff really expensive?

Being a reptile owner, I would never use it for my reptiles. Its purpose is its supposedly good for reptiles because if they accidentally eat some of it then it wont effect them as badly as when they accidentally eat normal sand. However, this is not true, and it can impact a reptile the same as normal sand. Especially if the reptile aquires a taste for eating it.

Sooo I dont agree with it, and would never purchase it, even if I could use it in my salty tanks. (Again, I think its more expensive than agronite? Cant remember.)

yeah, i dont use it for my boas either.......maybe it is a little more costly, but it is cheaper than carib sea, or other lfs type sands. also im mainly talking about an alternative to the silica-based sands some people are using because they can only get southdown in certain parts of the country, cant get calcium sand etc.,etc.....
