An ode to the fake aquarium decor..

Brackish tank: A ton of fake plants. Hard to do brackish plants and haven't had the time to start looking into it. Also have some Greek columns and clay pots.

No need to look into brackish-tolerant plants, bazil. There's a lot of great choices so it's easy to pick something nice. Here's a list: Anacharis, Anubias, Bacopa, Cabomba, Hornwort, Water Sprite, Cryptocorynes, Echinodorus, Pygmy Chain Sword, Hygros, Java Fern, Myriophyllum, Temple Plant, Ceratopteris, Banana Plant, Sagittaria, Vallisneria, and Java Moss.

Back to the topic...

I have tons of fake ornaments and fake plants. Most of that isn't in use now that I'm so into plants (except the gargoyles.. lol). A lot of it is even rather old now, but even more sentimental. I got rid of the enormous fake castle (ty Craigslist person).. but I still see ways to reuse a lot, especially the caves, bridges, arches. The little signpost that says "no fishing" looks cute sitting on a bookshelf.

I have a big fake ornament tree stump I think would look great covered in real moss.. same thing for an archway. (Not to mention Yuriy's bright neon cave that was painted black.) So I don't want to get rid of any of it.. just in case.

I have the same fake tree stump that your daughter has,:) but took out the fake plants that were attached to it and stuck some anachris down in the holes where the fake ones had been attached.

The anachris wilted and I took the remaining bits out. :headshake2:

Anacharis needs substrate to root in. Anubias, java moss and java fern would stay attached to your fake tree stump just fine with a little string-tying in the beggining :)

Anacharis actually does much better IME when allowed to float.

Someone posted a photo of a tank about a year or so ago which had fake, but very real looking corals, sandy bottom and colorful cichlids. A lot of people commented that they were fooled into thinking it was a saltwater tank. I searched, but I can't find the photo.

aside from plumbing for filtration, i dont have anything fake in any of my tanks anymore. no fake rocks, no fake plants, no fake wood.

spunjin and mgamer were great for real driftwood. the plants ive picked up here and there and just let them go nuts. i really like natural stuff.

ps: there are no really brackish tolerant plants outside of mangroves. java moss and java fern will last a while in low end brackish, but if you are going high brackish, forget it. silk plants would be the way to go
