Anchoring or tethering aquarium stand to wall?

I bought some of that galvanized strapping material (looks like an inch-wide piece of metal with regularly-space holes down the middle) and make two loops. I rapped a loop around each leg of the stand, near the top, and (making sure the loops were snug) attached screws to the wall behind. (Actually, it's screwed into a window sill, but the idea is the same.) It really stabilizes the tank nicely.

i was going to suggest those at first, but if a child were to grab ahold of the straps it would easily cut them

The straps are in the back, and they attach to the windowsill under the tank. You'd have to work to get at them. If you were really concerned, applying some plastic tape to the sharp edges would solve the problem. The way mine are attched, you can't even see them unless you look under the tank.
