I had the same experience when I came across these plans (entirely by accident). It's a great idea. It seems so obvious, I'm not sure why I haven't seen it before. And, like you said, I'd never dream of setting up something similar in lab without a vacuum trap... I like his method of attaching the hoses, too.
 
I use this method myself -- it has completely eliminated the yeast snot that used to accumulate around the CO2 reactor. I tried the fastening system depicted and had leaks. I wound up using #3 rubber stoppers with 5mm glass tubing. Much cheaper, simpler and easier.
 
Where do you get the stoppers and glass tubing? It's easy enough for me to figure that out for work, but for the home, does Home Depot or a hardware store carry such things?
 
Personally, I got mine at a store called American Science & Surplus. The stoppers were $0.25/ea and the tubing $0.30/ea. From what little I know here's where to try:
