I was at my LFS yesterday, and i was looking at a tank of fish, i forget what kind (tetras maybe) and they were INCREDIBLY bright. Like highlighter bright. It was outlandish. Upon further inspection i found a note on the tank that said that their genome had been spliced with that of a sea anemone, and that they were NOT dyed. I'm just wondering if this is as bogus as it sounds.

I thought they spliced in jelly fish genes not anem genes. I saw some danio's at pet supplies pluss the other day that were marketed as glow fish . Does anyone know if it's an inheritable gene or not?
thanks
Max

The "glow" gene is inheritable, and will pass to the offspring.

GloFish danios are the fish that have been genetically engineered with the flourescent jellyfish DNA. yes it is inheritable, and yes they will breed, but technically (or, rather, legally) you are not allowed to sell the offspring as the fish is patented (copyrighted?).

i don't know if they would actually take legal action on an individual breeder. . . . but this comes from the GloFish website -

Because fluorescent fish are unique, their sale is covered by a substantial number of patents and pending patent applications. The providers of GloFish® fluorescent fish, 5-D Tropical and Segrest Farms, are the only distributors that have the necessary licenses to produce and market fluorescent fish within the United States. The production of fluorescent fish by any other party, or the sale of any fluorescent fish not originally distributed by 5-D Tropical or Segrest Farms, is strictly prohibited. The only way I'd own glofish is if I made my tank extremely fake looking. Florescent plastic plants, that puke mixed color gravel, and lots of ugly decor.

I think glofish in my planted tanks would just look wrong.

a whole black and white pearly tank set up, with the flourescent fish as the only color.

yeah, that would be acceptable. have to make it very art-deco.
