Good morning all,

This is my first post though I have been lurking for a bit.

I just purchased a Marble Angel Fish yesterday and noticed something odd. I am trying to decide whether there is anything to worry about.

On one side, it has an eye that looks a lot like the one in Valerie's Angel Fish picture in the "post pictures of your fish" thread. It is large and has a red streak in it.

On the other side, it has a smaller eye with no red streak.

It is not poking way out from his head like you would see with popeye.

Is it normal for an Angel Fish's eyes to be asymmetrical, or is this a sign of disease? The fact that the Angel in Valerie's picture has a similar eye to the one I am worried about gives me hope. :)

Tank conditions:
55 gallon
ammonia: 0
nitrites: 0
nitrates: 5
ph: 7.0

Thank you all for any advice.

has the eye always been like this? or has it changed?
if it hasn't changed then its probly a product of the specialization/inbreeding of angel fish, just like you have to inbreed wolves to create dogs (sometimes not neccisarily close familly inbreeding, yet most of a type of dog are going to be related in some way) the inbreeding of fish creates more specialized show fish or pet fish. some types of fish have this distinct eye pattern, i believe that some/most wild angels have it too, most don't have assemetical eyes though, sometime in the past for angel fish, breeders who wernt breeding for eye color (scale color) bred out the striped pattern in angel fish eyes, your fish may be a cross b/t two types of aquarium angels or some other combination of genes. its just like dogs, most dogs have brown eyes, some have blue, but some (huskies) have both acasionally, its all in the gene pool

Thanks!

We just bought the fish yesterday, and kept seeing it from one side for most of the day, and then suddenly noticed the difference during feeding time. So, as far as I know, this is not a change.

The fish is acting healthy, moving about and eating plenty of the food I offered it.

Thank you for the information about this aspect of Angel Fish, this helps put my mind at ease. I'll just continue to monitor him closely like I would any new fish.

I think I figured it out...

I might be able to get a picture, though I have not practiced at taking pictures of fish yet.

However, I looked at the fish very closely last night and I think I figured out what I am seeing. It is an optical illusion. One eye has more white around the pupil than the other, and since he is a mostly black fish, this makes one eye appear smaller because it blends in with his body more. I was very relieved once I really saw what I was looking at.

Thanks again for your replies.
