Mom wants Angel fish in her 55g.

I think she'd like to have more than two.

---------------------------------------
I have had some small ones before, a couple of times. But for whatever reasons, they never were in my possesion more than a couple of months.
So I don't really have anything to call experience with them.

What I recall from reading a few yrs ago. Was something like. Get 5+ small ones at the same time. Then wait and see what 2 pair off. Then remove the rest.

Is that how it needs/has to be?

Or

Can we just put 2 small Angels in and see if they get along?

Or

put 5 in and tell them, "they All need get along!".

She isn't good at giving up any fish. So the get some, return left overs isn't really a good idea.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The most likey tank mates are/will be...

1 - 10" Upside Down cat. (I don't have the scientific name atm, but can get it)
He/she is somewhere around 14 yrs old and ain't going nowhere if we can help it.

4 - Albino Corys and plans include 3-6 more.
2 - Peppered cory's and probably 3-4 more.
2- flame tetras(I think thats what they called them) and most likely at least 5 more to replce the 5 we lost the other day when I found the tank around 95*, because of the heater malfunctioning(its in the trash can now).
1 - oto and most likely will add more as needed.

I would only get 2 Big Angels that are different sex, I wouldnt add the Upside Down Catfish, they might not get along I REPEAT MIGHT! Everything else seems okay.

I agree the upside down cat isnt such a good idea to get with the other fish you plan on getting

everything else sounds good

The upside down cat has been around alot of different fish.

Whats the worry about him? Killing other fish?

Everyone figures out his place(Cave) is His and stay away.
I just don't like the idea of miving him back to the 20g I just moved him from a few months ago. Although he probably did like it their all alone.

He'll do one or the other.

But really for now, I'd like to get the Angel thing done right. With preferably young Angels.

Keep the ideas / suggestions / experiences comming. I should have about a month to decide for sure about everything.

if you add 5 in the 55 ..you have a good chance of a pair forming. when this happens the pair will target other angels.
at this time it is recommended to remove the pair to a breeder set up. I use 29's for those.

the rest may get along.
even if a pair does not form. angels will establish a pecking order. and you may see some aggression in the tank. keep an eye on the angels and you should be ok.
cories are a good choice for angels.

In my experience: I started with 4 angels in my 46g and they formed 2 pairs. Even same sex angels will pair off if there is no alternative. For you I would recommend just getting 4 angels and let them figure it out, which I believe they will.

I think that buying additional fish and transporting them & forcing them to adjust to your tank and then just deciding to get rid of them is unfair. Then they will have to be transported and be readjusted all over again.

Just my $0.02.

How about 1 Angel in the tank?

From intitial post:

1 - (ignore this one)10" Upside Down cat. (I don't have the scientific name atm, but can get it)

If you go with 1 angel you can increase all of your schools. Something like

1 Angel
8 Albino
8 Peppered
10 flame tetra
5 oto (make sure you grow algae for them)

and I would add a school of 7 Lemon Tetra for contrast.
