We are about to inherit a 6 year old angel, with his tank, from a friend. He's the last of her fish, she's got a new baby and little time for tank maintenance, and she hates that he's all alone.

So, I'm wondering (a) how long Angels usually live and (b) whether we could/should add him to our 72g community tank.

15 years or longer

i would remove the golden algae eaters before adding angels to the tank. Chinese algae eaters (they have a gold color morph) grow quite large, stop eating algae, and become aggressive to other fish as they try to feed on the fishes' slime coats. the angels would become prime targets because of their big flat bodies.
