I was positive I knew my 1 remaining stunted koi angel was male. He had paired with koi veiltail & raised fry to free swimmers...until they decided to spit them into the filter intake. That was ok, I didn't really want to deal with babies.

The other stunted gift angels died off over 3-4 years & I had just the 1 "male" left, he seemed fine on his own. But just now there are eggs! Infertile of course, but I'm amazed. By behavior it was male & by abdomen fullness, the veiltail was female, but I was wrong!! Even though I know for sure this is a female, now she is passing over the white eggs as a male would to fertilize them.

I have had an old 2 female "pair" in the past lay eggs alternately by 2 or 3 weeks. (snacks!) Even with a young & very willing male they preferred their old partner to the very flirtatious male.
