Ok, so about a month ago i bought to small agelfish they are about the size of..a quarter now and they are very healthy and active..but today one just dropped dead! about 20 minutes before this i walked by the tank and the one that is now dead kinda freaked out abit.. his mouth is gapped open like..maybe he chocked on something or..couldnt get enough air? about 3 days ago i added a air stone so they would have more air..i duno what happend.. please help

its a 30 gallon tank, i have..1 cory,6 phontom tetras, 1 dwarf gourmi,2 swordtails, and now 2 angels. i only have a test kit for Ph right now. but every monday i get my water tested for everything at Big Als aquarium sevices. i cant afford a test kit right now.. and im there every monday anyways. they say all my tests are perfect, a lady at the store said awhile ago that angelfish scare easy and can have heart attacks? o.0 is this true?

I've never heard of that. But that doesn't mean it isn't true. My angel startles easily but she usually just rushes around the tank. I wouldn't worry about it too much, could've just been a fluke. But if any more fish start having problems, I would investigate further. A test kit would really help you out. If you have a petsmart, you can print out the online price for the Aquarium Pharmeceuticals Freshwater Master Test kit and take it into the store and get it for 13.49. Thats what I did. Most stores that test for things in your tank, use the test strips, which are not very accurate at all.

Aquarium services is a GREAT store.... at least in my area, they are very knowledgeable people.... they wouldnt be using test strips :)

did the angel possibly get scared enough to maybe jump and hit the tank lid or some other decoration? that could have caused damage to his mouth and internal trauma that caused death if he hit hard enough. . . .

My favorite store uses test strips and the people that work there are AWESOME! So, you are very lucky if your store doesn't. That just isn't the norm ;)

as mentioned get a test kit.

even tho you go get the tests..it is vbest to know what the readings are.

it is possible something was intorduced to the tank..it is also possible you may have suffered a mini cycle in the tank.
the other factor...bad genetics..did you get the angels from a breeder? if not (there has been threads about this) you are getting at 'B' quality fish.
the breeders sell the lower quality fish to the store. they reserve the best for their brood stock. they do sell high quality fish..usually they work between other breeders.but they do release high quality fish to the public. they do tend to cost a bit more..but if you get to know them..you get some pretty raging deals.

I have seen some of their routine, and they quarintine any new arrivals, I have personally seen them using liquid tests on the water, they frequently, and imacculatly clean the tanks, they dont overstock, and I have honestly, NEVER seen a dead or even a sick fish in one of their tanks.

Actually, at this moment I dont spend alot of time in there, being that i dont currently have fish (yet) but every time i have been in there, I always see someone cleaning or tending to a tank..... i usually end up tripping over there freakin hoses cause of my big feet :(

Being a big guy isnt always a plus lol.
