I'm about to get another 55 gallon tank...which is always a good thing. My gitlfriend wants angelfish, so I was planning on getting a breding pair of black veils. I was also thinking about getting a breeding pair of keyhole cichlids, but I would like to know what my other mid sized fish options are. I know that cories and tetras are good tank mates for angels, but i'm more interested in seeing what else is compatable, are black ghost knifes ok with angels?

Ghost knife gets too big for a 55. Cories are good. Not sure about breeding keyhole cichlids and breeding angelfish getting along all that well.

Gouramis might work or some nice tetras like congos which lovely and double up as great dithers.

Rainbow Cichlids! Sweet gentle and never bother tankmates. I recommend them all the time. Gentle enough for Angels and fast enough for Oscars.

(MID SWIMMERS)
if your going for a peacefull tank keyholes wuld be great also if you decide on something other than cichlids silver dollar can work well as a bigger SCHOOLNG fish
also some interesting mid swimmers are mollies and sword tails
also if your still into knife fish although theyre harder to find glass knife fish are more peacefull than there big black cousins and they dont get half as bigg

(BOTTOM DWELLERS)
i personally wuld get yoyo loaches instead of corries because they seem to be more active and also make great larger bottom dwellers
plecos can be pretty neat too and they help controll algae growth

(TOP DWELLERS)
and if your into verry different looking fish (based on your knife fish reference) look into african butterflyfish they get pretty large and its sometimes nice to have a fish that fills only the top of the tank hatchet fish are good topfilleres to

theres a good few other options for you
but what i find helps most when planning a tank is finding a good website that sells fish and just browsing the pictures for a while
when you find an apealing fish google it and see if it will work in yor tank or ask the people here

a good place to just browse is that fish place's website

Angels and keyholes would work well. Instead of keyholes, you could also do a pair of blue rams or a trio of apistos (borelli are my favorite).

I personally prefer to avoid anything that would compete visually (in size) with these two species. (I've done such a tank in the past). I also like to keep things somewhat biotope faithful. So, with that in mind, this is what I would do:

1. One very large school of rummynose tetra. These are beautiful fish that school well and in a 55 you could do 20. They compliment black veils very nicely and are generally too big for the angels to eat.

2. A school of false julii cories i.e. trilineated. Their coloration will also be a nice compliment to black angels (could do panda, too.) I'd say six

3. A beautiful albino long-finned BN pleco (or two). These seem not to get as large as other BNs and their flowing fins are a lovely compliment to the angels. I adore mine!

That's it. Over time, I've found that the nicest tanks are those that don't have a gazillion different species in them.

Also, this should be planted!

Good luck!
