Must they be in pairs or groups? Can they be happy and healthy as solitary angels in a community tank?

Thats good to know - I have no pet store that would be willing to lend me a bunch of angelfish to find a pair - so the only way for me to enjoy an angel is as a solitary fish...

I had a huge male that lived a solitary life just fine after he killed his mate.

Thank you all - I'm very excited!

I keep my big beauty all by himself:) Well, there are other fish, but he's the only angel.

I kept the prettiest angel I ever saw all by itself when I was younger. It did great. It was a pretty intelligent fish as well. Intelligence of course benig a relative term here... fish aren't exactly higher order species after all.

I find they enjoy at least a couple. My two follow eachother around constantly. a pair do well in a 29 gallon. To have more than 2, you'd need a bigger tank. Could do up to 4 in a 55 gallon. You should get them all together while small. Ones with established territories may get agressive to newcommers.

My understanding is to have two you must have a breeding pair? Can they both be male or both female?
