My daughter has a male betta in a 2.5g tank which she has lost interest in. She keeps the fish upstairs and it tends to be forgotten at times. I would like to put it in my 55g planted tank that houses 3 relatively young angels, some rummies, cardinals and an assortment of benign bottom dwellers. If this would work, the betta would have a great environment and receive better care. My biggest concern was the angels! Thus far, the angels are only aggresive toward each other. In reality one is aggresive towards the other two only. Thanks!

I've done this in several tanks and never had problems. The Angels may chase the Betta for the first day or so, but once they realize they are not angels, they stop.

I think it depends on the individual fish, as well as the set-up. I tried keeping one angel and one betta in a 45g, and they were fine for weeks, but one day out of the blue the betta shredded the angel to bits (he was pretty small then).
I'd say go ahead and try it, but keep the 2.5g's filter up and running (you can create ammonia to feed the beneficial bacteria with fish food if there are no fish in the tank) for a while just in case you need to move him back.

My wife would not appreciate a 4th tank downstairs. I think the planted tank is heavily planted enough for refuge if needed. I'll have to think about it. The betta has been alone in that 2.5 for a long time now. He may be set in his ways! Thanks for the input.

I'll be one to say that it can be done, as I look over at the 20 gallon they've shared for the past year. but both species are variable in personality and like some people you just can't stand to be around those fish have their own quirks like that.

I will say that both my angel and betta are the most laid back I've seen in a while, the betta especially. last time I put a mirror up to the tank my single male angelfish ran in terror and the betta looked over the top of the mirror like oh there you are... hi :)
