Angels and Tetras

I have seen cardinals with angels..the cardinals tend to bet a wee bit larger than neons. plus the school of cards was big(this was a large tank wel over 200 gallons) heavily planted with lots of driftwood (tangle) the anges were wild peruvians and they actually eft the cardinals alone.

I have Cardinals with two Angels in a 55g. I have had this set up for almost a year. The only problem I have is the Cardinals eating the Angel eggs. If the Angels are small and brought in with the Cardinals they will more than likely leave the Cards alone.

This is confusing. I am getting conflicting info here.

Are there any other attractive and colorful schooling fish that I can put in with the Angels?

Cardinals are generally bigger than neons so if you get a small angel they are less likely to eat cardinals however with such a nice big tank your angels will get nice and big and therefore may or may not eat your cardinals eventually.
All fish are different but as far as I have read most will eat neons but not always cardinals..
More confused? Have you set your tank up any? Can't wait for pictures when it's all done...

Thanks again for the advice. It is appreciated.

2 weeks from today I have a guy from my LFS coming over to help me get everything set up so that I can begin cycling. I decided to get an expert involved because I want to do this the right way the first time.

I just have to decide on decor and fish. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the new info but it's getting easier. I've been reading this book:

It's been very helpful. I am re-reading the section on water quality right now.

I am just getting anxious. I've watched that tank sit empty for 4 and 1/2 years and being only 2 weeks from filling it with water is very cool.

I have also heard that Cardinals get a little larger than Neons. Also, Neons are the ones that are the natural prey of Angels....Cardinals aren't, so you should be safe keeping them with Angels. Black Neons, Lemon tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Flame tetras, Rummynose tetras, Emperor tetras, and Head and Tailight tetras are all schooling fish that can be kept with Angelfish.

yes, cardinals do get larger than neons(they are not the same species) also black neons get larger than neons..the noens are in the size range that angels wil readily eat.

this is not to say angels won't try and eat cardinals. one of the methods used it to use large schools...they angels will try and target the prey in a large school there is a lot of distraction. so it minimizes the 'opportunity'
there are caveats to this of course.

are you going with scalare? altums do get larger than scalare and leopoldi's are smaller yet.

scalare are the more commonly seen angels.

I have 4 angel fish with 6 neon tetras and they do just fine together. Altough when i bought them they were in the same tank, so that could have something to do with it

it's hit and miss with angels..I have some very aggressive angels that I would never mix with neons..I also have some that do fine with back neons.
