I have a 40 gallon tall tank sitting empty in my room. I was thinking that I would like to have some Angelfish, and since they do like tanks that have some height on them, I figured it would be a good match. So my question is how many could I safely keep in there? I was thinking, since I'll probably be keeping them in their until they're full grown, that maybe 3 would be a good number? Let me know what you think, thanks.

Three angels will usually fight, it would especially be bad if two of them paired off. Angels seem to do best in a school when young and in pairs as adults. Your best bet would probably be to get six small angels and raise them up until a pair forms. Keep the pair and return the rest.

I have 4 in my 30g tall and they will be moving to a 100g very soon. I agree with the fact that a pair would be better in adult hood - i got four as I will have (hopefully!) several tanks available for them within the next year should any fighting occur.
You may want to buy a pair - little more expensive but you wont have the issue I have at the moment with my juveniles "flexing their muscles" at each other!
They grow very quickly so if you do get more than 2 have a clear plan on what you are going to do with the others. Scalarae would be shorter in hight than Altum's when fully grown.

Well, that makes sense. Maybe I'll keep a pair and get some little bottom dwellers or something.
Best bet :)
