Angels in Odds or Evens

I just put 4 into my 55g only other fish in the tank are a couple Cory cats..not sure if I can/should have any other fish with the Angels

once ( IF ) I get a breeding pair, the other 2 will come out and either go into my 37g Tall or get traded in at the LFS for some more Cory Cats

It is highly unlikely you will get a pair with less than 6 not that it doesn't happen. If you do manage to get a pair there is room in that tank for all as they will chase all fish to the other end of the tank.

I have a 90 where I had 2 pairs form and they would spawn a day or 2 apart and all the other fish would be in the middle of the tank quite a sight I have moved the pairs to there own tanks now and a 3rd pair has formed.

Icom you can have many type of fish with angels just not barbs or any other fin nippers angels are quite peaceful fish.

Some barbs are fine. Cherry, gold, and checkerboard are usually not bad. It is the tiget barbs that are the nippers when it comes to barbs.

so maybe I should go get a couple more Angels ?? this is only a 55g,I don't want to overload it.I could put a pair in my 37 when/if the time comes:confused:

what would be some good fish to put in the 55g with the Angels ?

I keep loaches, female bettas, a rainbow shark & an otto with my angels. I have also kept dwarf gouramis with them and they've all been fine.

keep in mind if you add more angel you increase the chance of pairs forming..that will upset the tank.
angel pairs get pretty territorial.
you can add more cory's since the like their own company. you can also consider peaceful cichlids like Rams or keyholes. if you don't want more angels look for festivum.
top dwellers include larger tetras cardianls or black neons are as small as I would go..skip neons as the angels may find them as tasty morsels.

As long as the angels grow up with the small tetras they should be fine because the angels will recognize the tetras. Adding small tetras to a tank with grown angels is a problem.

not always true.

even if they grow up with the neons..they aren't friends..angles are ambush predators..read predators.
they will try and eat anything they can fit in their mouths.
yes sometimes they do fine..but there is no guarantee if you raise them together as juveniles..they will be fine.

I will agree..they will 'recognize' the tetras..but that isn't always a good thing for tetras.

I have been keeping angels for years..many years..they are Cichlids and as a result you cannot really guess what they will do.

As always Star_rider had a good point, I had that problem with neons in my 65GL tank with 5 Angels. When the angels got bigger they started to hunt in groups. It was something to watch for a couple days, until the 6 neons were no more.
I wouldn't put anything small in the same tank from that point, unless it is a snack.

If you want small things like neons in with them, that is how it needs to be done to give the best chances of success. There are never guarantees with compatibility. Many times it simply takes keeping them well fed and never feeding live foods to avoid problems.
