I just bought 4 juv koi angel's and I had read many post here and had posted asking about tank mates for angels.

I was at another LFS (Peruss) very nice stoe, very knowlegable staff etc. They told me I shouldn't have my angels and rainbows together. Now, I'm not sure what to do. I have a 55 gal that's available but 4 angels will be to big for that tank and the 55 is really too small for all the rainbows. I planned on putting them in the 130 gal with the angels, 3 clowns, gold algee eater (I know he may get aggressive, I will get rid of him if he does)

I guess I'm looking for some reassurance from you guys that this will be ok with the angels and rainbows. I know the angels are a bit slow moving but the rainbows aren't aggressive towards other fish they just swim fast.

Thanks for your input, I could take two of the angels back and only keep two and then they would be ok in the 55?

Thanks
Darlene

You didnt say what rainbows you have but I've kept neon dwarf rainbows (M. praecox) with angels with no problem.

Personally I dont think 4 adult angels and some rainbows are too much for a 55 g, but then again it depends on the size and numbers of the other fish, incl which rainbows they are.

If I would have put the angels in the 55 gal. I wouldn't have put rainbows with them, I probably would have moved my Mollies, Black Finn Tetras and a couple hatchets. I know the tetra's have a rep for nipping but I've had these for a couple years and have never seen them go after any other fish. They're always too interested in nipping each other, or I should say chasing but overall they are very calm. The 55 would be my first choice if other's felt it would be ok.
Thanks

I don't think a 55 is to small for rainbows or angels. Rainbows and angels together yes that is a problem, just to many fish for such a little tank. I would suggest doing either one or the other. But my GF's dad has 4 angels in with 4 Bosemani rainbows in a 90 gallon. They seem to be ok, I think the rainbows get crowded as they usually stay away from the angels but no major problems. I think the problem is they both like to occupy the top half, angels are slow and big and rainbows are fast and move a lot. So they don't go together the greatest but it can be done. My suggestion is do rainbows in the 55 and angels in the 130.

I've been told I have too many for a 55 gal and if I put the angels in the 130, which I planned to do, I will have to move my Gold Gourami. My original plan, 130 gal, rainbows and angels in the 130 and the Gold with some of the other tank mates over to the 55. So could I put the angels in the 55 without worrying? I really don't want to take them back, I really like them. I have Yellow Rainbows, Bosesamis. austrailans, and Lake Wanam. A total of 15 Rainbows. I was told not to put more than 12 in the 55 gal.

Thanks

yeah, that's alot of large rainbows.

I have a pair of Angels with 8 Australian Rainbows in my 50G long (same footprint as 55g) without issue. However, due to the large size of the Rainbows, I've been tempted to sell them and get a school of Tetras instead. Rainbows are great fish but I think they'd be much happier on their own in a larger setup. Having said that, it CAN work but I think you'd be much happier with a smaller, less active schooler such as the Tetras you mentioned.
