I've got to wonder if this newbie was just looking to advertise here.

Less the 24 hours after his post it's up for auction on ebay?

check out the bids too, youll see something pretty "fishy"

Yea, apparently that one guy wants the item pretty bad.

Before you start making "fishy" comments, the guys e-mail address is from http://aquaria.se/eng/start.html Which is an Aquatic Museum / Aqaurium from Swiss. So if you think I'd shill bid and go through the trouble to get a .se domain.

I decided to come here, because I'm pretty versed in forums and I know there is usually an expert in one sbject or the other so I figured I might of gotten a good answer to what this exactly is. If I was simply spamming, do you think I would keep on talking or explaining myself?

I like sharing unique items I get with my forum brothers, but this was too unique for any of my normal peeps at mma.tv / offtopic.net to even have a clue to figure out what it was.

Without wanting to further hijack this thread...
Munich is one example, Cologne (enlish)= Koeln (german) is another. I suspect there are a few more (not to forget most province names have an english version, Bavaria= Bayern, Saxonia= Sachsen etc)

I never quite understood why its done. After all - New York is called New York all over the world, or London, or Paris... right ?

Oh well i am rambleing. :duh:

And when it comes to the item being "advertised" here - so what ? If someone is interested in this particular type of item - he/ she might've never found it without seeing it posted here. Besides - this thread had some entertainment/ knowledge value as fishylisa pointed out - something that cant be said for all of them. ;)

Hey, no problemo. I would've suggested waiting a little bit for an answer though before putting it up for auction. What if your reserve is way too low?

It may have been my family's

Well, now to really hijack the thread...

this tank, or one like it, was in my family. It was my grandmother's, she came from sweden around the turn of the century.

My mom sold it in an antique auction without telling us until it was too late, she was curious to see what she'd get for it. She has done the same with baseball card and a lot of other stuff we'd wished stayed in the family, but there you go.

Anyway, I've been running a daily automatic ebay search for antique aquariums, knowing it would one day show up. I'm not sure this one is ours, but I did a google search on "burlin fish tanks" and hit this thread.

We did try keeping fish in it, and they lasted on the order of months. We always suspected the copper, but it was a pretty small tank and even goldfish don't last forever. It did seem to have some kind of coating on it. We ended up just keeping a display of nice seashells in it. (People have used copper on boats for hundreds of years, I think that there was general knowledge it was bad for fish, but maybe the maker didn't know it. Or maybe the maker thought it would kill algae but not fish).

Anyway, I'm curious to know if this may be ours. Sounds like you know it's whole history in the US, so probably not, but just in case: any chance it came from connecticut? do you see any sign that an air line was siliconed into the back inside edge of it?

Wow, I just noticed I had this thread up, I thought I should post an update.

The item that was being sold ended up going for a sum of 5200.00 if I recall correctly. The item was actually from Chicago Hardware, but was still seemingly a very valued item. The person who brought it in did not expect it to turn out any way it did and he really did have an attic treasure.

Unfortunatly the picture links don't work so I can't see what this is all about.
