I have a 72G tank that I want to treat with salt. Can I dissolve enough salt in a couple gallons of water to treat the whole tank if I add it slowly?

I don't see why not. I am in the process of a salt treatment myself. I disolved the salt for my 40g in a 5g bucket. I also added it all at once with no affects on the fish at all.

should work fine, Just add it in slowly as mentioned, and make sure it is all dissolved before it goes in.

I know you guys will crucify me and this is NOT a recomendation, but for the last 20 years I've just been tossing course salt straight into the tank and letting it slowly disolve in the tank, as course salt tends to do (bout 5-10 minutes). Never knew any better back then and never actually killed anything. I suppose I should be doing it differently these days... Bad habit I have...

20 years ago I also had a tank that went 3 years without a WC... Not something I do these days!
