So even if you cut the wattage from the 50/50 bulb in half, you'll still be over the 1w per gallon mark. IMO, unless you're planning to grow plants that have a very high light requirement, you should be fine with what you have.
I would keep an eye out for a cheap 6500 k replacement. That way you don't have spend a lot of money at a lfs but still get good quality lighting. I'm sure what you have now will work but you may soon run into algae problems because of all the blue light.
I've heard that red plants use more blue light than green plants so you try to get some of those, see if it helps.
Sorry if I made it sound like blue was not at all benificial to plant growth. What I meant was yes, blue is absorbed by plants, just not as readily. If something is a certain color, it absorbs everything except that color. so red things reflect red, but absorb the energy from green, and blue. I've never heard that red plants do better under blue light, but it definitely makes sense to me. I just ordered a 110 watt CF retrofit kit for my 55g from www.petsupplyliquidator.com today. 2x55w bulbs, and I got the 6500k bulbs. I have a 40w 50/50 over it right now but it looks a little purple for my taste.
