my black mystery snail hasn't moved in about 18 hours -- which is quite unusual for this guy. i just noticed that it has white specks all around its shell, mainly the middle, which were not there a couple days ago. does this mean anything? his "door" is still attached.. what do you think, alive or dead?

i'll make it a poll to make it more interesting and post the results soon.

If the operculum is still attached, he's alive. That's the best sign of a dead one--well, that and the foul stench. My snail would frequently sit for 4-5 days--typically not more than every other month or so. Make sure there's enough food for him--the bigger snails have an enormous appetite and the algae produced in a tank typcially is not enough.

At least your snails haven't tried to commit suicide like two of mine have. Had one that somehow crawled out of the tank, even though there is a lid on it. And I've had two that seem to have a craving for the intake of my Aquaclear 500. One made it, and the other was found too late. Since then, there's a sponge in all my intakes.

still no movement (been over 24 hours) -- the door is attached. my other snail is doing great, though. plenty of food in there for both of them (zuchini, romaine, algea). we'll see! the white spots are what bother me mostly.

Pull him out and sniff him. If he dosn't make you want to puke then he's alive. You could also see if theres any resistance to the door. if he comes right out with a gental pull, then most likely he's :-P
