I'm still working on getting pics of this, but I'll throw it out anyway.

In my 29g I have taken small pieces of malay driftwood, drilled holes in the back small enough that i could just barely get 1.5 in long pieces of rigid airline tubing into them by tapping with a hammer. i then fitted the suction cups from "airline tubing holders" onto the exposed ends. Then its just a matter of wedging some java fern clippings into the crevises (optional) and sticking the piece to the back of the tank wherever I want it. I have had two pieces suspended to the back of the tank for several weeks now, so it appears to be at least semi-permanant. It looks awesome and makes the tank look way more 3 demensional as well as filling that empty area that so many 20 high, 29g, owners have to deal with.

The biggest surprise was how much it affected the behavior of the fish. The added structure is a natural attractant for all the fish in the tank. My apistos and angel are constantly picking little critters from it, and my hatchets who used to stay in contact with the water surface (hard to see them there) have taken to schooling a few inches further down. This tank has just moved into first place among my tanks. I will try to put together a how to article with pic enetually, but you get the idea.

So the suction cups hold the small pieces of airline tubing and both are hidden behind the driftwood. Good idea. I had a larger piece that I drilled and inserted suction cups. It wasn't quite as secure because the holes had to be larger (and not very deep). I think I'll try your method.

Here is the one I had done.

Did you ever get pix of this ect? Looking forward to seeing it

with pieces of driftwood ive had trouble sinking, i also attached airline holder suction cups but i didnt bother with any airline, i merely drilled the hole to the size of the end of the suction cup, put some GE window and door silicone 1 (aquarium/fish safe) in the hole and viola
