ok i have four in my 10g, i have some hornwort and rocks in there. the problem is my 4 bolivian rams are very territorial. when one gets close to another, they start raisin their top fins, and start peckin and at times even lip lockin each other. how can i get the 4 to pair up?!?! they each have their own little corners in the tank and i wish they'd start socializin.

Yup BK is dead on. I'd go no smaller than 20, for one pair.

i agree with bk 10gal is probably good for a male or a mated pair but not 4, that is too little of a territory issue for them, in the wild they meet each other and if it doesnt work out for them they leave, yours can not unless you intervien, good luck..

I wouldn't put a mated pair in less than a 20g long. (A 30 inch long tank). I won't be surprised if one of them emerges as dominant and stresses the others to death. I wouldn't even put one male in a 10g. They get to be 4 inches and a 10g is only 20 inches long.

Return some.

Why do you want them to pair up? Are you planning on raising fry?

:iagree: they are way too cramped to play nice.

Getting a 20 gal tank would work if you have a pair. The thing with Bolivians is they choose their mate and once chosen stick with that one. Are you sure you have both male and females? And just because you have 4 doesn't mean they will pair up even if you have both male and female. Sometimes they just don't have the "chemistry" together. With a 20 gal if you get 2 to pair up, you need to get rid of the other 2.

If you want to keep 4 you will need at least a 30 gal. Bolivians like to have at least 10 square inches of floor space each as a territory with some having more than that.

Hope this helps.

4"?!? I'd read 3" and that was just for wild caught adults, tank raised ones typically being smaller.

That said, I fully agree that they're too cramped in a 10g.

I've got just 1 pair in my 46g and they sometimes push my Angel around - it's pretty funny to see them team up and herd the Angel across the tank. They never hurt anything, but they do throw their weight (which, combined, is less than half the Angel's weight) around.

Actually i have a tendency to agree with cathy on their potential size.

I have 2(now) in a 75 with discus.

and these are already 3"+ with one actually larger..it came out of it's hiding place yesterday..and I was awestruck by it's size.
easily 3 1/2" with big shoulders.
