I was looking into Tatia perugiae and saw that they eat ants in the wild. So, I was thinking, could I just feed ants to my other fish sometimes? Are they toxic? I doubt they're very filling but aren't they supposed to have a ton of protein? Anyone ever tried it?

well if u get em from the yard u may hav to wrry bout toxins and parisites. its prob ok to do it once in a while. my betta has eaten all kinds of insect tht fallen into the tank or landed on the water. but lets see wht others say

Not ants, but back when, we used to buy ant eggs as a commercially available fish food.

CRIKEY YOU MUST HAVE SUPER MEGA ANTS in california, here in good ol' blighty theyre only about 3mm long, surely not enough to suffice a snack??

Dont think the ants are too big unless you get those ones that fly. o_o but come june/july, they're everywhere!!

ah the flying mega-drunken heavy ants ha ha!

hmm

I would be careful of the types of ants you feed your fish. Primarily stay away from Red Ants or Fire/Africanized Ants. The reason for this is that a few years back here in Texas there were a lot of fish in the hill country that died because after one of the flloods there were a lot of fire ants in the water and when the fish ate them, they started stinging them from the inside apparently and it killed the fish. But then again, this was fish eating a lot of fire ants.

I feed ants to my fish once in a while. Specially those winged ones, my fish like them more. However, as already stated, I steer clear of the ones whose bite have a "zing" to it. I fear that the substance causing the zingy feeling are actually toxins. Wouldn't feed ants to fish on a regular basis though, I'd consider it more like a "treat" as compared to regular food. :) But that's just me.

EDIT : If you use pesticides/insecticides in your home then it may be best to avoid feeding them ants to your fish. :D

Fire ants are South American...there are no 'Africanised' ants...you are confusing them with honeybees.

whenever i get bit by a fire ant, it hurts enough...i'd hate to be as small as one of my fishes and get bit by one....ouch!
