One last question, do I need to trim the roots before attaching it? Or will the existing roots attach?

I wouldn't trim the roots, they are pretty slow growing. My big leaved a. barteri sent long straight roots into the substrate rather than attaching to the wood. Only 1 piece of thread (plus the long roots) is holding it now after more than a year. Maybe it moves in the filter return too much to grab on well, I try not to disturb it more than necessary.
