any catfish small enough for a 5 gallon?

its off topic, but is there a such thing as a ten gallon tall? The space I'm working with is about 20 inches wide, and 20 inches long, and my old ten gallon was 24 inches long and like 12 inches wide, if i remember correctly. I could fit an aquarium that size on there, but it runs the risk of getting hit by my door )=

A 24"x12" aquarium sounds like a 15 gallon, which are 24"x12"x12". They do make ten gallon long tanks, but they have a 24"x8" footprint.

Check your online suppliers websites. Some of the Kits are odd lenths, for instance an Aqua One 510 is 18 inches wide and fairly tall. I think it would hold about 12-15 gallons. Just have a look. They are out there.
Go with the biggest tank that you can comfortably fit in that space. There is not so much difference in routine maintanance and the bigger the tank the more stable it is, so you may actually be saving yourself a heap of work.
