Any effective way to deter snakes without hurting them?

I don't think there is anywhere that it is illegal to shoot snakes, except areas where it is simply illegal to discharge a firearm. What I was saying is that in certain states, like california, snakeshot (a type of ammunition that resembles a shotgun shell, but is made for a pistol) is illegal. Pretty much any snakeshot would be overkill for a garter anyway. It is meant more for something the size of an adult diamond back. I hope you can find a non-injurous method to deter these snakes, or learn to love them...

I hope so, too, Hebilly. I fully realize that I am the problem, not the snake(s). Maybe it was something about disturbing a reptile nest..not sure what it was that I read on the Fish and Game commission for PA. I think it may have taken the hint. So far, so good. I'm going to hope that I was just a "Motel Six" on the way to a pond or something :)

Good idea. It will take over your garden, but you can make iced tea from mint. I wouldn't recommend it from snakes. Worth a shot. If it doesn't work, at least the snakes will smell good.
 
You need a pet mongoose!
 
Go see a therapist and work on some systematic desensitization to snakes. Then you'll love them and can all get along.
Seriously, I had some as pets when I was a kid and they are really cute, you can ship them to me.

Another good idea. Been there, done that, got the therapist bill, decided to study psych- LOL. Actually, I can pet boas and other constrictors. Just not really into cohabitating. In terms of shipping them, If I thought I could get that close, it would already be on it's way, priority. I'd even send its overnight bag and some snacks...
 
If you lived near by I'd come rescue any snake you came across. My neighbors call me when they find snakes all the time. They think I'm nuts for saving them but I've been called worse.
