Any experience with Seaclear acrylic aquariums?

I've been looking to upgrade from my 20g high to something with more "floor space." Found a few tanks on CL, but haven't found exactly what I want just yet. Hit the Petco site to see when the next $1/gallon sale is due, and found this:

50g acrylic

I like the idea of an "unbreakable" tank and am not adverse to building my own stand (my plan was an on-sale 55g). But, $230 is a lot of cashola. Thoughts?

acrylic is prone to scratching, I wouldn't go for it. Even if they can break, glass is still better for a long term viewing tank, IMHO.

I recently got a SeaClear 75 with the matching stand for free. A well constructed tank, but I am prejudiced against acylic because of the scratching issue. I gave it to a friend. The unbreakability would have been great when we were throwing parties every weekend like when I was in college, but no fish that has any business in a 50 is going to break a glass tank. For around $300 in my area you could buy a used 120 with stand.

Acrylic is Stronger, lighter and more clear than glass. I can move a 100 gal by myself. You just have to be careful. I have owned numerous "plastic tanks" and prefer them.. You do have to be careful. If you tend to trip while walking and chewing gum, then stick to glass.

around here that would be considered very expensive.. In Az used tanks that are actually being sold are going a buck a gallon.

I don't see the weight as an advantage, but I routinely move and install glass tanks up to 180 gal by myself as long as there aren't too many stairs involved.

I would wait for the Petco sale, there should be one fairly soon. Even if acrylic and glass were the same price I'd choose glass because I can scrub and razor off anything without worrying.

Furniture dollies I am guessing? I wouldnt be able to move it by myself and I am thinking it must take you all day.

A refrigerator dolly, a bit of muscle and proper application thereof. It really blows people's minds when I put it on the stand solo. But it is a bit of a cheat, since I can't put a 4' 120 on the stand by myself. Physics can be a bear!
