The water lettuce is someother scientific name; I too burnt mine. Salvinia Natans (quoted from Java Plants): small chins of opposing leaves covered in fine hairs with clumps of roots produced by each leaf, this interesting plant is easy to grow. Worked very well in my low light 1.5wpg tank.
Also discovered that the lotus bulbs are meant to be protected by CITES!.
I noticed in another thread you're investigating the Fluval pad. Juwel has one too, although I'm not sure of their effectiveness, as at the time the nitrates in tap & tank water were low.
My understanding so far of nitrate removal is that it needs a low current, anearobic environment. I can't quite understand how adding a pad into your current filter can work, as this will more than likely be a high current, arearobic environment. Perhaps just a marketing trick, but I'm undecided currently.
There are special anearobic filters for nitrate removal eg, nitrogon, similar to an external filter.
I'm exploring all the cheaper options first, but no doubt will end up with some relatively expensive solution.
