any invertebrate fans here?

anyone have any huge crayfish? i wanna get a pair of blue knights

Sure would be nice to find some healthy 'clean-up' shrimp, or Amano shrimp... I'm still unsure about the 85+ degree water though...

Care to share conditions, feeding, whatever your handling was? And how fine did fry food need to be? Infusoria?

well, they were placed in the 'infamous' biorb (known at my work because it can breed any species of killi we have within 2 months, and no-one else has been able to:D), 4 wood shrimps (3 females 1 male) were put in.
the biorb itself had double the amount of gravel, with a collection of mulm at the lower levels (this is what i believe allows the fry and baby shrimp to feed after their first hatches).
i do water changes once every month, and my water is pretty danged hard (pH 8 and enough gh and kh to stand a spoon in). the parents were feed on normal catfish pellets, shrimp pellets and liquifry number 2.
then, the females released the eggs and a couple of months later, little baby wood shrimp join their parents in the search for food.
i think keeping the parents in the tank encourages the babies to hide in the gravel, and therefor be nearer the food, without the parents there, they come swimming up and rapidly die.

and thats about all i can tell you, it wasn't intentional at all:p:D

Many thanks - that is a place to start. My water is only moderatly hard, GH 9, KH 7, pH 7.6-7.8. I did not have any aragonite present or do anything to boost the hardness and pH. I'll try again under more Rift-like conditions.

How big is this infamous "biorb"? :D

Wippit - IME, other inverts with crays are called "food" :shake:

(I corrected my name :) )

What inverts have people tried? I'm pretty sure large enough snails will be ok, and if I can get a large enough FW crab (yes, I know, but still), it might be able to fend for itself. And if I include enough hiding spots...

... well, we'll see. I also wanted to make it a planted tank, dunno how well that'd work with the blue bulldozer...

it's only 30 litres, but mine is very heavily planted, with bogwood and the likes.
i did a test earlier, and the pH was 7.6 and the hardness around your levels, so i'm guessing that the reduction of pH over the course of the month helps with the spawning, and the lack of hardness is all the little baby shrimps taking up the minerals in each moult.

like i said before, i don't have hugely accurate details, but they've spawned 3 times now, so i guess i must be doing something right:p

Kagh't - whatever you have and are doing, don't stop!

Wippet - :o - can you guess I am in the selection process for a new dog(s)? And am properly embarrassed?

Crays, along with opportunistically (word?) consuming tankmates, are justifiably known as lawnmowers. I'd suggest starting with stem plants which do okay as floaters (anacharis, water sprite, etc.) to see how thing go with your particular specimen.

Don't be embarrassed... no one yet has gotten my name spelled right on the forum (psst... you spelled it wrong again) :)

"Mulm" is the aquarium equivalent of compost in the garden. It is the product of bacteria, infusoria, fungi, etc breakdown of fish and plant waste, and is home, food supply, and haven - thus also DIY buffet for tiny fry (whether fish or invert).
