I just purchased tis 5-6 inch dempsey, for the umpteen time asked on this site, what is the sex of this fish???

She looks like a female to me. A trick to identify a female JD is to look at the lower gill plates. If there are green streaks, it is a female. Male has no color on the lower gill plates but a lot more color the head, body and fins.

Uhmm...my female has red strip on the top of the dorsal fin.

The most accurate way is to look at the gill.
 
hmm all 4 of mine have the red on teh top and they all have color int he gills, some are brighter then others though. I thought the bright ones were female and the ones with less were males?

does anyone have a good picture of a female's lower gill plates? so i could see the difference between a male and a female (that would prolly mean i would like to see a picture of a male's lower gill plates as well)
