There was a post I've read here before that Midas cichlid I think has thicker lips than red devil. I was guessing Midas cichlid on your fish but I could be wrong. As for flowerhorns, depending on the strains you get, most males often have larger humps than females. The ovipositors would be the more reliable indicator for distinguishing sexes though. I used to have these before but I'm no longer a fan of them.:)

i think it's a red devil.i read some where the midas have a u shaped mouth.where as the rd has a v shaped mouth.please don't quote me it could be the other way around.here is my rd and fh.note that fh and rd are hybrids.my rd is a cross rd/midas.or soooo i've been told.but who knows.:headbang2:they rule

Nearly all red devils/midas cichlids sold by fish stores (chains, especially) are hybrids between the two species. I'm no expert, so I can't tell whether it is pure red devil or not. It definitely isn't a flowerhorn though.

The previous poster said RD are hybrids? Like I said, most fish sold under that name are, but you can get pure wild caught ones, for example from Jeff rapps.

hey piggy thats a sweet looking fish with the bright reds..

Your FH seems to be a very common strain to those of us who got into the FH business a little late:) Mine looks just like that and I have seen MANY others exactly like it. The Zhen Zhu (SP?) or pearl of the orient. Is this what it was sold to you as?

is that a female FH piggy?

looks like a female tome. the hump is smaller and usually the males have long points on dorsal and lower back fins.... not 100% without pulling the fish out and checking it. but a gen. rule.

Yours looks like female. not sure though. I will share some of mine too
