Any one use PURIGEN?

I switched to purigen from carbon because of the fact that it does not remove inorganic minerals from the water. My plants are growing like crazy in my purigen filtered tanks.

Well I guess I am convinced! Goodbye carbon hello Purigen!

I have been using Purigen in my aquaclear filters for over a year. My tanks have never been clearer. It even keeps my tank with fancy goldfish clear. They produce alot of waste. You still have to do weekly water changes, but every little bit helps. I highly recommend it.

Quick question, can you use Purigen with live plants? It sounds as if it will take all of the nutrients and fertilizers that plants need out of your water.

Purigen is actually kind of marketed towards people with live plants, which is why I just picked some up (waiting for it to arrive before I start using it). According to what I've read from Seachem, Purigen is attracted to organic nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen. Meaning it'll remove nitrates from fish waste/plant waste etc., but the ammount of nitrates in fertilisers (inorangic nitrogen) you use for plants Purigen will remove is negligible. As long as you're adding nitrates to your tank in the form of some type of fertilizer, you should be okay.

Purigen absorbs organic materials out of the water that the plants do not need. It leaves the nitrates alone just removes the organics that usually rot producing these nitrates.

I can't really grasp the point of continued use of Purigen in a planted tank. It's almost like adding competition for the plants.

I wouldn't say it's a competition to the plants, unless your primary form of nitrates is rotting plant matter... :p:
