I am looking to get a water return pump for my wet/dry filter and came across a Rio HF pump at a pretty good price. Every spec. I have read looks good, as far as doing the job, However, I have no first hand knowledge of these pumps. Are they reliable? How noisy are they? Does anyone have experience with these pumps?

Any information is good information,
Mike

pretty much the worst product you can put in your tank. I put them on par with adding bleach.

They have a habit of seizing and releasing the goop inside of them into your tank, which apparently is quite deadly. Not to mention the good chance of getting zapped or shocked by such crappy devices.

have no problem with mine, i dont put any head pressure on them though just water circulation. i wouldnt trust them to run my entire filtration setup either. go with magdrive which is a real good one or laguna if you want it a little cheaper.

Thanks for the quick reply. Both of you confirmed what I was thinking; if a deal seems too good to be true, there is usually a reason.

I figure, I am going to be pumping the water up about 4.5 feet and I am better off, in the long run, spending more now to save more later. I have been looking at the Supreme Mag pumps and I will have to check out the Lagunas.

Thanks again,
Mike

I've got the PondMaster 1800 and my LFS guys says it the same as the Supreme's with a 18ft power cord. I'm very happy with it, I use it submersed and it not too loud

My on complaint is that there are no feet on any of the Danner pumps which means the vibration could cause it to slide around your sump a lil bit. But it are hard plumbing your return system it shouldnt be a problem.

If you go over to ReefCentral.com, and look at their forum, you will find a huge thread (over 300 posts) of Rio horror stories. Most of them involve either electrocution of tank inhabitants, shocking of owners, release of oil or copper into a tank and other horrible things.

I had a Rio pump running the Protien Skimmer in my reef for 4 years. One day, I came home to find all of the power in my tank off, including my lights and heaters. I found that the 20 AMP main breaker in the circuit breaker panel had tripped. When I reset it, it tripped again. So I started looking around. When I put my head near my sump, it smelled like an electrical fire. I pulled the Rio out (with the power off) and found that it had cracked and released enough current into the tank to trip my main breaker (thank heavens I had a grounding probe in the sump). I used a bunch of carbon to get the crap that the power head released out of the water.

I was lucky, I didn't lose any livestock or my life. Others have had much worse experiences.

Avoid Rio, unless you like to kill fish.
