Okay,

I need to come up with a stocking list for a 30g aquarium. I think I want a community tank and it will have large rocks, sand on one side and larger rock substrate on the other. It will have plastic plants for now (I'm new and impatient). I'd like activity everywhere in the tank. With this much structure in the tank, I know I'll be giving up some space so I'll have to stock a little lighter right???

I'm pretty sure these fish will get along but I don't know EXACTLY which species I'll get. Will it make a difference in the following fish?

Any and ALL comments will be well recieved...also, if you have different species suggestions, I'm all ears.

I was thinking of the following bio-load but it doesn't really account for the space taken up by the driftwood/rocks. Also, I have no idea how to know how many of each to get so they're happiest (where do you find THAT?)
Comments anyone?

Here's what I've come up with....

10 tetras
6 rasboras
3 corys
2 rams

Sounds fine to me.

What sort of setup is it? Planted, unplanted? What sort of filter(s)? Cycled? Sounds like a very cool plan, but it may be close to "over-stocked"... IMVHO

I really like Rummynose Tetras... :O)

Thanks for all of your opinions! I'm looking into ALL of them. I love researching fish that are new to me. Which is pretty much all tropical fish, LOL.

Hooked Newbie: It's not planted yet. I have plastic but desperately want to upgrade to real plants but I just don't see that happening for at least a few months. If you think it's overstocked...how would you fix it? Less of which fish?

I was also thinking of leaving out the rams and going with a single, larger, peaceful fish for a centerpiece. Do I have room for one without taking out the rams? Any comments?

I don't know if it's overstocked... what sort of filters do you have? How often do you do water changes? Do you test? I've realized (painfully) that those are key questions for stocking. I was always afraid of plants, but check out low lights (Java Moss, Java Fern, Anubias, Anacharis, etc.), I've become a fan and they're not nearly as costly or difficult as I had feared. Mgamer offers some great plants (shameless plug...).

Disclaimer... I'm a newb too, I would lose the rams and add 2-3 cories. I think it's all a mater of what you're willing to put the required effort into... stock heavy, work hard. Stock light, work less...

I haven't filled the tank yet Newbie. It will be filtered by an AC 110 (overkill) and I'll do water changes as needed during cycling and then 15% a week after that.

I'm still trying to learn about cycling and water chemistry in a microenvironment such as an aquarium.

I will test painfully often as I run a fish hatchery and am very paranoid.

Again, thank you for your comments.

Dont do a waterchange in a new tank for 12 wks. Try to find someone with a established tank and get some gravel or old but fresh filter cartridge or a sponge/box filter or just 3g of water
A ac110 might give too much current A ac 300 would be more than enough or a canister with spraybar, maybe a XP2
just my opionon

Thanks Scott-kim,

I've discovered that the AC 110 is too much filter but that's what I've got. It's brand new and I bought it thinking I was going to get a 55gal. My buddy just gave me his old, empty 30g so I was going to limp by. Any suggestions on how I could make this work? I could turn it all the way down and try to buffer the flow with some sort of obstruction. Do you think that would be sufficient or should I just buy another filter and be happy with having a setup ready for ANOTHER tank. LOL
