I am doing a fishless cycle on my recently aquired 29. I just dosed the tank but I am getting 8 ppm. Is this to high or does it really matter?

I believe excess ammonia can be detrimental to the bacteria that takes care of the nitrite... Beyond that, I can't help you...

any ammonia is too much. a quick water change is always helpful.

Yeah, I'd knock it down to the 5 ppm range

Arggh..

too much ammonia....need water change *drags bucket and siphon over to the tank.

Story of my life!

Thanks for the advice.

Too much ammonia will slow the cycling. You are at about twice the ammonia level needed. Perhaps you overdosed. Agree.......
"need water change. drag bucket and siphon over to the tank."

:iagree:

High ammonia at ~8 can start to kill off bacteria actually, thus slowing the cycling process.
