Any suggestions? Setting up a betta sorority

Wow, that person also says it's ok to home 6 fm in a 10g tank. Personally, as I and BFM have said I think it is a bad idea.
It is your tank, and your fish so you are going to do what you want with it. I myself have done sororities and BFM also has experience in them we are both talking from experience here.
Each fish is different, so maybe you will get lucky and it will work out for you...for your and your fish sake I hope it all goes well and you end up with a group that does well together.

Good luck

I would recommend more than three, if you're determined to do a sorority, but it depends on the temperaments of the girls. When I had three, one of them got picked on fairly often - not terribly, but not a great set-up. Having four spread it around more, so that no one girl got stressed. BettaFishMommy is right, though, 10 is not really enough room. Unless you get sisters or freakishly calm fish (unlikely), they will have spats, probably more than you would like. Before I separated mine they got along peaceably about 90-95% of the time, but every so often one of the top ranked girls would go off on the lower girls. Nothing horrible as far as injuries, but chasing and nipping.

The trouble I have with starting a tank around a Betta is that some of them just cannot go in a tank with anything else at all. Snails, shrimp, frogs, tetras, cories - all of them could be fair game, depending on the Betta. So whatever you decide to do, unless it is just the one fish, you will need to have a backup plan.

If it were me, I would leave the Betta you already have by herself. Or if you want more fish and can do it, get a smaller tank (3-5 gal) for the Betta and put a small school of peaceful fish in the 10 gal. Just my $0.02.

Good luck. :)

that article also states you can have up to 10 females in a 20-30 gallon. way too many, IMO. and they quote the '1 inch of fish per 1 gallon' rule. a rule that should never be followed, or else we'd have foot long oscars in 10 gallon tanks!

go ahead with what you want to do, it doesn't seem as if you are listening to the advice of those on here that have attempted a 10gal sorority and had it not work out (long or short term)......

I've also tried a sorority in a 10 gallon and the girls did nothing but bicker, fight, and tear each other's fins. I would not do it again since the fish weren't happy and it was just stressful watching them. :(

It's risky, but I would try four females with a floating plant. And just an aquascaping tip, make your gravel go from low-to-high from the front to back. So that it slopes towards the front. It provides the illusion of depth. Good luck and keep us posted!

Ok, so, I have 7 betta girls in a 55 gallon tank. I wouldn't add any more to that, and that is, again, a 55 gallon. Do not do a sorority in a 10 gallon tank. I misread your post, and then went back and read it just now, and a 10 gallon is way too small. In my experience, you can find websites to back up whatever you want to say, even if it may be wrong. 10 gallons just do not have the room that the females need to feel comfy, and they will fight. You WILL end up with torn fish fins, stressed out females and eventually they will kill the weakest one. I am not exaggerating here. I have personally seen this several times. I asked BFM if a 10 gallon was sufficient and she said no, but my friend went ahead with it anyway, and he had so many problems it was unreal. Bettas will also tend to stay where there is the least water movement, which means, they are not going to spread out that much, at least not enough in the 10 gal, and they will be vying for one choice spot. You have to have a big enough tank that there are multiple choice spots with low flow, and that does not happen in a 10 gallon.

Sure, you can do it if you want to, but next time, if you are not going to listen to experienced members, do not ask for their opinions. I find it antithetical to post asking for help and to ignore the proffered help. Sorry if that was rude, but I think discounting someone like BettaFishMommy, who has YEARS of experience in exactly what you are asking, is also very rude. Just my .02$

If you are upset by this and would like to flame me, please do it in PM. Thank you.

I want to try it out. if it doesnt work I'll just divide the tank :) No big deal :) I'll keep a close eye on them and i still have to get more plants. I know it seems very small and a 15 would be better but my other option is to throw neon tetras and corydoras in.

I really want the sorority but could i put 6 neons, 6 corydoras and some shrimp in there with Naomi? If i can do that more safely

Guppygirl 1230 :I was really just trying to ask about plants and how many females ... not whether or not to set up the tank so technically I am listening to the advice given to me on those topics.

well now, i wouldn't exactly say YEARS, lol, but i've been doing the betta thing since day one of my finkid keeping and have immersed myself in as many things betta as possible, including the attempted sorority.

as i mentioned, dwarf cories (4 or 5) and about that many small tetras (like neons or cardinals) would be a good mix.

shrimp need a tank to be very well established for them to live comfortably. i would hold off on the shrimp for now, until you have a tank that you don't need to move so often (going home for the Christmas holidays, spring break, end of school in June, etc).
