I just bought some rummy nose tetras, I've lost three already. Do you guys have any tips to help keep the others alive ? I plan on bringing back two and just getting store credit so when the others are bigger I'll get more again. There are 4 that are alive right now. They are in a 10 gallon with lots of fake plants. The water is very soft and acidic. usually reads 6 but is most likely lower then that. I didn't realize how picky these fish are, but I sorta expected it. They don't like to eat anything I give them. they might nibble on flakes, I think they might've had some tuifex worms but I have my doubts. thanks for any help you can give

Is the tank cycled? When you say you tank is 6, do you mean pH? What are you actual readings? pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, KH, GH, etc.

Rummys do well in large schools. I started with 18 and only lost one, never to be found. Are they true Rummy nose? True Rummy-nose will have a bright red nose when they are health and water conditons are good. When water conditions start to turn south the red in there nose will all disappear. But they do require very good water. They are not as hardy as Dainos, but mine have been through a mini cycle and a case of ich. I very lucky only one died but still dont know why.

I have rummy nose. They are hard to acclimate initially and its common for some to drop dead when you forst bring them home. Some don't even make the trip from the store to home. They call them "crummy nose" in the trade. They are hardy once established. They grow 2" and need a hsoal of more than 6. A ten gallon is too small for that. They need good water too. And they don't like PH or temperature fluctuations so dnt mess with the PH by increasing or decreasing it.

thanks guys I'll pst more info about my setup when I get home from work today. the ten gallon is just a quarantine tank, they're going into a 29 g after they are all clear.

I have never read that they are hard to acclaimate?

I bought 10 rummy nose from LiveAquaria.com, threw them in my new 65g with a school of seven rasboras, six silver dollars, a package of 90g Bio Spira and cycled the tank. Couple of days later I added 1tsp salt per gallon and some Prime to ward off any nitrite and ammonia increases.

That was two weeks ago. I didn't lose any fish at all and the water parameters were a little on the high side (.25) for a week. My pH for non-CO2 is 7.6 to 7.8

Are you guys sure they are supposed to be difficult? By what you are saying, I should have lost several.

Btw, I love those rummies. They school *all* the time.
