I bought a 96-watt PC kit from them, and it is excellent - highly recommended.
As for the construction, this will depend greatly on your building skills. I remember my first kit from them was built with a piece of brown vinyl rain gutter.
I bought the 4" size I believe, along with two encaps (for the ends of the hood) and all in all it cost me $6 for the hood components. (Check the size of the reflector in comparison to the gutter size if you plan to do this, I remember it was a tight squeeze but it worked.)
Only downside is when you drill the screws in to mount the reflector, the screws will pierce through the top of the plastic, so you have to find something to cover up the screw ends.
If you are more handy at building you could just make the hood out of wood, as others have suggested. This is what I did with my SECOND (and all subsequent) hoods.
The rain gutter doesn't look to shabby, but it can't compare much to the wood. It is a snap to build though - literally (the endcaps "snap" on

).
It all depends on how much time/experience/money you have to put into it.
